About Me

Hello, my name is David Coronado and I am a Junior at Rice University, studying Sport Analytics and Statistics.

My Story

Hello! I am David Coronado, and I pride myself in problem solving, working hard, and always having a smile on my face. I come from a family where college was only going to be a dream. My parents immigrated from Mexico about 30 years ago now and while we have built a good living for ourselves, I have always had the dream of being able to do something bigger than working at the restaurant with my dad. I found that passion during the pandemic when the NBA came back in the bubble. My family had never been big sports fans, so basketball had just been a curiosity that I heard other people talk about. But, when I saw Luka Doncic on the TV hitting step-back 3s and just putting people in a blender, I knew I had to learn more. I immersed myself into basketball fully after that and it has driven me ever since. I hope to use this passion alongside my problem-solving skills and analytical thinking to be able to help teams at the highest level.

To make this goal happen, I am currently at Rice University studying Statistics and Sport Analytics. When I first applied to Rice, I had no idea that the Sport Analytics program was available, so I had applied to join their renowned Computer Science department. However, during Rice's Orientation Week, I was introduced to Dr. Hua Gong and Professor Tom Stallings who have both been valuable mentors and led me to the Sport Analytics program. With their help, I have been able to work on a variety of projects such as reports for the Rice Women's Basketball Team and data visualizations utilizing NBA data which are available in the Projects Page. I have also tremendously enjoyed my Statistics, Computer Science, and Math courses which has helped by logical thinking and programming skills.

Outside of my analytics work, I greatly enjoy being an advisor to others. This past summer, I had the pleasure of being an advisor for Orientation Week which allowed me to connect with new students and help their transition into college. Throughout my work, I hope to be able to help all of those that I encounter.
