NBA Data Visualization Reports

Last semester, I had the opportunity to work with Professor Scott Powers, former assistant GM of the Houston Astros, to create analytics reports utilizing a variety of different statistical methods.

January 2024-May 2024

I was able to gain experience with regularized regression, Bradley-Terry models and Hierarchical Clustering. I utilized these techniques to analyze the 2023-2024 NBA regular season. These reports also helped me build my skills in R where I was able to use ggplot to create a variety of data visualizations. I analyzed these visualizations and other findings which culminated into written reports on a variety of topics such as team strengths, player value, projected wins, and a statistically sound model of archetypes. Oftentimes I approached these papers with an idea of the result I would find already in mind. Despite the Pistons having a historically bad record, I felt certain that they wouldn't be at the bottom of team strength rankings or at least they wouldn't be an immense outlier. Of course, sometimes the result would not align or be as interesting as I hoped for however this experience was necessary for me to become a good analyst.
