I have recently begun work with Dr. Hua Gong on a personal project utilizing player tracking data to develop new metrics for passing in the NBA.

March 2024-Present

I am currently working with Dr. Hua Gong to use tracking data from SportVu. This personal project utilizes the player tracking data available from the 2016-2017 NBA season in order to develop passing metrics. Currently, I am working on develop Hidden Markov Models that will allow us to automatically tag different events as specific types of passes by using ball speed, trajectory, and other metrics. After developing these models, we hope to be able to assign these passes a weight of added win probability. We hope to find what kinds of passes are truly effective and who makes the most of these effective passes.
